Are Dental Implants Safe for Pregnant Women?

Replacing missing teeth is important for both your oral health and your confidence. Dental implants are often considered the gold standard because they restore function and appearance while protecting your jawbone.

But what if you’re pregnant and thinking about dental implants—should you move forward, or wait until after your baby arrives? Here’s what you need to know about implants and pregnancy.

Why Timing Matters

Dental implant treatment involves multiple steps, including oral surgery and healing periods. During pregnancy, doctors and dentists aim to minimize risks for both mother and baby, which often means avoiding elective procedures. While urgent dental work—like treating infections or removing a severely damaged tooth—is usually safe and even recommended during pregnancy, dental implants are considered elective and typically postponed until after delivery.

Risks of Dental Implant Surgery During Pregnancy

There are a few reasons why most dental professionals recommend waiting until after pregnancy for implants:

  • Anesthesia and medications: Dental implant surgery requires local anesthesia, and in some cases, sedation or antibiotics. Although some medications are safe during pregnancy, others may pose potential risks.
  • Radiographs (X-rays): X-rays are needed to plan implant placement. While dental X-rays use minimal radiation and protective shields are used, many providers prefer to avoid them unless absolutely necessary during pregnancy.
  • Healing and stress: Pregnancy already places physical stress on the body. Healing from implant surgery may be more challenging during this time, especially if nausea, fatigue, or dietary changes affect recovery.

What You Can Do During Pregnancy

Even if you postpone implants, you can still take steps to maintain your oral health during pregnancy. Keep up with regular dental cleanings, as gum disease and untreated decay can negatively impact both your health and your baby’s. If you’ve lost a tooth, your dentist may suggest a temporary solution, such as a partial denture, to maintain your smile until you’re ready for implant surgery.

When to Consider Dental Implants

The best time to begin dental implant treatment is after pregnancy, once your body has fully recovered and your dentist can safely use X-rays, anesthesia, and medications as needed. At that point, you can work with your provider to create a treatment plan that restores your smile with long-lasting results.
