What is Invisalign? How does it work?

Invisalign logoInvisalign is one example of the amazing technology that is currently available in dentistry. It is an orthodontic system that uses a series of clear, removable aligners to move the teeth into the positions that we want them to be in.

We will take impressions of your teeth and create a virtual model that will be used to plan your tooth movement. I can actually show you what your teeth look like before we start and what they will look like once treatment has been completed!

Every two weeks you will wear a new set of aligners until the treatment is complete, and the teeth are in the positions we had planned for them to be in.

For most patients, I will need to see you every 6 weeks to make sure the teeth are moving as planned.

Invisalign compared to traditional braces

Woman with Invisalign aligner on her teeth Invisalign is a much more comfortable alternative to braces because it does not use wires to straighten teeth. Traditional braces have metal brackets and wires which need to be tightened (ouch) and can poke through and hurt your gums and lips (ouch again).

Invisalign wearers don’t have to worry about all the food that gets stuck as in traditional braces, and the constant cleaning braces require to maintain healthy teeth and gums. With Invisalign, you can eat whatever you want. Simply remove the aligner, eat and drink what you desire, and pop in the aligner and away you go (after brushing your teeth, of course!).

How long does treatment last?

The answer is…it depends! Very minor cases can last as little as 10 weeks and more complex cases can span over a year. I would say the majority of my patients in Invisalign treatment are completed in approximately 5-9 months of treatment time.

Why should I consider Invisalign?

Invisalign aligner If you are thinking of straightening your teeth, it is most likely because you are not happy with the way they look. They are either too crowded or there are spaces between your teeth that you wish were not there.  While correcting these issues will no doubt result in a nice smile, there are other reasons to consider Invisalign.

  • Crowding of teeth makes it really hard to practice good home hygiene. These areas trap plaque and increase the incidence of tooth decay and/or periodontal disease (gum and bone loss). Eliminating crowding by straightening your teeth will allow you to take better care of your oral hygiene.
  • Crowding and spacing will get worse with time. If you are not happy with the way your teeth look now, I can bet you will not be happy with the way they look in the future. This is because crowding and spacing issues progress and will worsen with time. The sooner you intervene, the shorter the treatment time will be as compared to waiting until it is “really, really bad”.

Am I too old for braces?

Invisalign is perfectly suited for adults, as the aligners are near invisible and will minimally interfere with everyday life.  Invisalign will enhance your smile and self-confidence, and you will have teeth that are in ideal positions for home care and help you keep them for a lifetime. So the answer is, you are just the right age for Invisalign!
